How I Coach
How I coach
My role as a coach is to help you get clear on where you want to be, or what you want to have in your life. We then work to define what’s between here and there, and each session we define the next step towards your goal, while staying in integrity with your inner self.
I have been coaching since 2001, when I trained in Australia with Results Coaching Systems. We’ll work on specific goals, over a set number of sessions, getting you moving and succeeding. I have found more than three goals tends to dilute the power of the coaching methodology, though I’m always open to being proved wrong.
I continue to use the basic coaching methodology taught by Results, but many of the tools I use, and much of my style, now comes from the Gestalt Awareness Practice studies I have done over the last 10 years in addition to Motivational Interviewing techniques. What that means is that some time during each session will be devoted to acknowledging where you are currently, before we move on to where you want to be. I have found that being more aware of the current difficulties helps to work through them, rather than spending endless energy resisting them.
My intention is to always be compassionate, and my style is intuitive and includes questioning, reflection, mirroring, and affirmation of strengths. While I’m always working with you towards your very specific goals, I am intentional about slowing down for the challenges, and being present with what is true, in the moment. During sessions we take time to pay attention to what might be stopping you, seeing if patterns emerge that might inform other situations, and how these patterns can support you, rather than issues to be overcome. I believe that awareness of patterns means you have more options and more choice in the future.
